Tonight I am the worst mother in the world.
I don't know how that happened, when I was trying so hard to be the best.
Perhaps the problem lies in the number of mothers I was trying to be...and to the number of children that seemed in need.
There's really only one.
And that's you.
I'm sorry.

We can only be what we can be, and that changes with circumstance, emotions, places, people, events, pressures, triumphs, failures ... in other words, we change constantly, and the person who goes to bed at night is not the same one as woke up in the morning.
ReplyDeleteWhat gets me through the day is a constant appraisal of how I am reacting to things - is it as a Parent (Don't do that), as a Child (Why not?) or as an Adult (I would suggest you don't do that because if you do you will hurt yourself etc.) The parent of a Child need not always respond as a Parent, nor the child as a Child.
Wise words...I've read them over and over. Thank you for taking the time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I find myself reacting in Child, I feel I've failed. My time for being Child was up long ago.
But you are right, we can only be what we can be.
